Women's Fund Closes in on Fundraising Goal

Women and children are gaining empowerment and experiencing life-changing opportunities through the work of the Women’s Fund of Portage County.

The group, founded 15 years ago, is closing in on its Spark the Legacy Campaign with a goal of increasing the Women’s Fund Endowment to $500,000.

“The future of our community is dependent on the opportunities available to women and children,” said Joan North, the chairwoman of the endowment.

It all started with almost 100 women dedicated to empowering female philanthropists by creating opportunities to fund programs and initiatives that help meet the needs of the two crucial demographics. Since its inception, the Women’s Fund has granted more than $225,000 to programs and initiatives to help meet the needs of women and children in the community.

One-third of the endowment goes to the local YMCA Foundation and Saint Michael’s Foundation.

The Women’s Fund is “such a powerful group that helps women and children and leaves that legacy. We are really blessed to be collaborative partners in that legacy,” said Angie Heuck, director of the Saint Michael’s Foundation. The fund’s impact “is much more powerful than just the grants they are giving.

”The Central Wisconsin Children’s Museum is a benefactor of the fund and has been working with the Women’s Fund for about 15 years. It has helped the museum’s Every Fund, which reduces admission for low-income families and gives free admission to other groups.

The women are “really important primary funders for that program, we rely on that funding every year,” said Tonya Kowalski, the museum’s educational director. “We’re really lucky and fortunate to have them in our community.

”The group of dedicated women, spearheaded by President Barb Massoglia, receives an overwhelming amount of grant applicants each year. While they are not able to address all the needs of the community, with new funds coming in they hope to reach even more groups.

“We want to raise everyone’s awareness,” North said. “Women are donors, too. Women and children help out in the community, but we need to identify their needs and help these groups continue to grow.”

The group is looking for about $120,000 to reach its goal. Donations of any amount are welcome. Donors can be a part of the Spark Awards, by donating $300 each year for five years, a total of $1,500.

A gift to the Women’s Fund is tax deductible. As the endowment grows, the amount of the grants distributed to women and children in Portage County grows.

How to donate

Donations can be made through the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin website, www.cfcwi.org. Checks can be sent or dropped off at the Community Foundation, 1501 Clark St., P.O. Box 968, in Stevens Point, with the Women’s Fund identified.

Those Unexpected Gifts...

Each gift made to Laura’s Fund touches our hearts in a special way.  Even after 16 years, our friends and family continue to remember and support her wishes and dreams.  It is those unexpected gifts that bring tears to our eyes.   Here is one that we have been asked to share…

Recently, we were notified by the Foundation staff of a $1,000 gift made by a gentleman from Upper Michigan.  It came from a special person whom our family got to know just this past year.  How our paths crossed is truly a miracle.

At the site of the Laura’s accident near Tomahawk are 4 crosses.  Over the past year, someone has been mowing a heart around these crosses.  You can easily see it in the bank along the highway.  We asked family and friends…but could not find out who was doing this.  Finally, with the help of the newspaper editor in Tomahawk, a photo story was published and the newspaper was contacted by a local resident. Shortly thereafter, we met the man who has a special connection to these crosses and our family.

Sixteen years ago, Erick was an EMT with Tomahawk Fire Rescue.  It was his very first day on the job and his first call found him responding to Laura’s accident.  The impact of this tragedy has followed him all these years.  Caring for the crosses was his way of expressing his sorrow and reaching out to us.   Meeting Erick in the fall of 2011, was the first time we actually talked to someone who was there that day.  In that meeting, I knew our daughter and her friends got the best possible care and were treated with respect and dignity. Someone was there holding each of them for us.

It has been a year since that meeting ….This most generous gift to Laura’s Fund came from Erick.   We don’t know how he knew about Laura’s Fund at the Community Foundation … but I think Laura may be working some of her magic, again!   Erick will always have a very special place in our hearts.
