Mission Funds Support Specific Community Efforts

Each year, the Community Foundation provides grants within our mission areas that focus on specific community needs. By giving to a Mission Fund, you have the opportunity to support community efforts you are passionate about while making a lasting impact.

Mission Funds support the focus of our mission while allowing donors to support community efforts they value without designating a specific charitable organization or program.

The Stevens Point Sculpture Park, a new community sculpture located on the scenic trail adjacent to the Green Circle Trail, is one project that received an Arts & Culture grant for their project “Impressions of Point.”

The mission of the Sculpture Park is to provide a welcoming and accessible outdoor venue for diverse work while enhancing the cultural life of our community.

During the first phase of the project, participants from five local groups, Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, PABS Point Area Bicycle Service, Hmong UPLIFT, Ignite Young Professionals, and the Polish Heritage Awareness Society, were able to create artwork in sand molds. Molten iron was then poured into the molds to create nearly 100 different pieces of art on this sculpture.

“The purpose of this sculpture was to bring various community groups together to create a physical manifestation of what Stevens Point means to them. This community is truly about family, history, and legacy and this sculpture represents a lot of pride in our community – the parks we visit, the neighbors we see, and the nature that surrounds us.”

Elizabeth Wellso,
Stevens Point Sculpture Park Board Chair

“Anyone who wants to create an everlasting impact in our community might consider making a gift to a Community Foundation Mission Fund. A gift to a Mission fund gives donors ease and flexibility to support community efforts they are passionate about while ensuring their gift will grow and make a difference for many generations to come. It is through Mission Fund grants, that the Foundation has the unique ability to respond to the ever changing needs of the community today and in the future.”

Meet Renee Gehrke

Meet Renee Gehrke
Renee Gehrke is Co-Chair of the Community Friends Steering Committee. Community Friends is an all-volunteer organization established more than 30 years ago to provide socialization activities for adults with physical, mental, and/or development disabilities.

With more than 2,000 low-income adults with disabilities in Portage County, it is crucial these individuals receive opportunities to take part in events that other community members easily enjoy.

“Community Friends is like a family. On the outside I feel like I don’t belong. Community Friends gives me confidence, self-esteem and a sense of belonging.

Some of our members are in wheelchairs or use walkers. Some are mentally ill, mentally handicapped, or elderly. In Community Friends, everyone is accepted for who they are.
I am grateful for the friends I have met and that they accept me for who I am. There are not a lot of places where I can go and feel loved by everyone I am with.”
